Prohibition came into being in 1920. That made the gangsters rich. Bootlegging was big business, and George “Bugs” Moran was running an operation out of a garage at 2122 North Clark Street.
On February 14, seven members of Moran’s operation were gunned down while standing lined up, facing the wall of the garage. Some 70 rounds of ammunition were fired. When police officers from Chicago’s 36th District arrived, they found one gang member, Frank Gusenberg, barely alive. In the few minutes before he died, they pressed him to reveal what had happened, but Gusenberg wouldn’t talk.
Police could find only a few eyewitnesses, but eventually concluded that gunmen dressed as police officers had entered the garage and pretended to be arresting the men.
Shortly after that Al “Scarface” Capone was undisputed leader of all nefarious activities in Chicago.
As of today, [Friday] this month has already tallied 22 homicides, which is three times more than the massacre tallied. Last year we saw the equivalent of 74 St. Valentine’s Day Massacres but we doubt any of those homicides will become part of Chicago lore quite like the original.
That number is as of the Friday, 11 PM totals. For HeyJackass! the weekend runs from noon on Friday until 6:00 AM Monday. The festivities don’t usually start that early or run that late, but they can start before most people get off work, and run into the early morning hours of Monday. Unless it is a 3-day-weekend, of course. The totals will probably be updated periodically as the weekend goes by.
‡ “The Outfit” was (is?) the name of Al Capone’s organization. When I was living and working in Chicago in the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the FBI was still trying to stamp it out. Maybe they still are.
Back before the new year started, I mentioned that the Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Guitarists has some problems. For example, the 2018 review of that list has Eddie Van Halen ahead of Stevie Ray Vaughn. (Van Halen definitely sold more records, but I’m not sure that means he’s better at playing the guitar.)
Today we look at another one of those problems. An error of omission.
Steve Howe was the guitar player for the Progressive Rock band Yes, during their recording of The Yes Album and Fragile and Close to the Edge. He had a solo career, and he reunited with some of the guys from Yes in the 1990s for a separate project. He is not included in the list from Rolling Stone. He wasn’t included in 2018’s revamp of the list. Here’s a sample of his playing, so you can see for yourself if you agree. Even if this is an acoustic song, you could chose just about any song off that album and there would be a bit of guitar to catch your attention somewhere.
I mean, consider that Rick Wakeman was the keyboard player for Yes during the time Howe was the guitar player, and you can begin to see how his absence from that list makes people scream. (I mean, do you think Rick Wakeman would have been working with a putz?)
The incoming asteroid, 163373 (2002 PZ39), is 990 meters in diameter traveling at about 15,200 meters per second. Which is enough to do crazy damage.
That’s big enough to trigger a nuclear winter and mass extinction events on Earth following a collision will intersect the planet’s path this weekend.
the good news is that it will miss us by about 5,775,000 kilometers.
While I don’t like to feed the ignorance of actual measurements crowd, consider that a 9mm bullet from a typical pistol travels about 338 meters per second. (Depending on load, bullet weight, barrel length, etc.) And that bullet is SO much smaller than asteroid 163373 (2002 PZ39).
NASA has warned about these kinds of asteroids.
If 163373 (2002 PZ39) hits the planet, its initial blast would instantly kill off millions.
Then, due to its size, the energy from its explosion would be enough to trigger a global nuclear winter that could last for years. The harsh environmental changes triggered by the asteroid’s impact could lead to the mass extinction of different species.
If you want to save the planet, you should be worried about doing something to defend against these kinds of collisions. Because the next one will happen eventually.
Sweet Meteor of Death‘s 2020 campaign slogan is “Just End It Already.” Which given how long the Presidential campaign has gone on, I can understand.
And for those of you who say “I don’t like the metric system,” consider that the OFFICIAL definition of an inch is that 1 inch = 25.4mm. That is the only definition you will find for the current inch. Meters (millimeters, kilometers, etc.) are defined so that the speed of light in a vacuum is exactly 299,792,458 meters per second. So even if you are using inches, the basis for your measurements are the metric system, or the International System of units.
My guess is the suit will go nowhere, but buried in the piece the following bit of trivia.
About one year ago, the sheriff’s office announced that it would no longer use its gang database and said it had plans to “terminate” the tool after politicians and activists called for its destruction.
And so we can see the true cost of Social Justice. It is measure in blood and lives.
Facebook and its wholly owned sister company Instagram, in banning Ms. Loomer from the social media sites, maliciously defamed her by publishing that she is a “dangerous individual” and a domestic Jewish terrorist.
Ed Driscoll Misses the Lead EU funding a communist insurgency in the Philippines – it is masquerading as “environmentalism.” Color me shocked.
Of course since the State’s Attorney (Crimesha, also known as Kim Foxx) and the judges don’t work for the mayor, so she can’t really call them to a meeting at city hall. But the cops can’t do much if the bad guys pay no consequences.
In the wake of a homicide and shooting tally that was the worst for a February weekend in 18 years, the mayor said she “had a lot of very difficult conversations with CPD leadership.”
And while this is a post about Chicago, that isn’t the only city that has come to be in the grips of the Social Justice Warriors, or the only city to see an increase in crime.
Hat tip to Second City Cop who notes that the CPD has been 3 years without a contract because the folks like Lightfoot want to make it much easier to fire cops. Guess what?
If you get told over and over, even after months of training and hours of on-the-job training and extra training and more training that ever before, that everything you do is under review by armchair quarterbacks who never served a day on the street, that never made a snap decision under unbelievable pressure, then guess what? The smartest move you can make, day after day, is to disengage. Do not jeopardize your continued employment or your remaining free from prison and/or bankruptcy.
Welcome to the world that Social Justice has wrought.
[FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)] says that it has received 4,883,231 complaints since its inception in May 2000, with an average of around 340,000 complaints per year and over 1,200 complaints per day during the last five years.
Phishing heads the list and non-delivery of goods is high on the list.
The most financially costly complaints involved business email compromise, romance or confidence fraud, and spoofing, or mimicking the account of a person or vendor known to the victim to gather personal or financial information.
Don’t trust email, even if it looks like it came from someone you know. Pick up a phone and call. I know right. Actually talking to someone is SOOO 20th Century.
“Criminals are getting so sophisticated,” [Donna Gregory, the chief of IC3] added. “It is getting harder and harder for victims to spot the red flags and tell real from fake.”
“In the same way your bank and online accounts have started to require two-factor authentication — apply that to your life. Verify requests in person or by phone, double-check web and email addresses, and don’t follow the links provided in any messages.”
Unexpectedly, a problem that was ignored didn’t get better. But it was ignored when it was rural problem; now it is hitting suburbs and people are begining to recognize that there is a real a problem. At least they are waking up to the problem in Texas.
“My husband grew up on a pig farm,” Taryn said. “[So he] took it upon himself to restrain the animal while we waited.”
After the pig was captured, a police officer referred the Powe’s to a personal friend that could “take care of the problem,” Taryn said. She said it took her husband, who is a plant operator for SI Group in Baytown, about three minutes to catch the pesky pig and tie him up before help arrived.
Don’t expect the suburbs to do anything productive until after several people die in attacks. If you don’t think hogs can be that dangerous, look up what a boar-spear is, and why they are designed the way they are. And then hope the wild hogs never show up on your doorstep. (They are roaming the Midwest, but haven’t become the problem they are in Texas. Yet.)
I had no intention of watching his show. But I may have to rethink that. This guy is a genius.
America! Binge-watch #AfterLife on @Netflix tonight. It’s about a man who realises that humanity is a disgusting, narcissistic plague, and so becomes angry & depressed and loses the will to live. For a contrast – not chosen at random – lets look at Ford and the F-Series pickup truck. 2019 U.S Pickup Truck Sales Analysis. Well actually we can consider all pickup trucks, but comparing with Ford will do. As always, click the image for a larger view.
During 2019 Ford sold 896,526 F-series pickups in the US, and another 145,210 in Canada.
Also, while Ford manages to make money, as of 2018 (the most recent year I can find numbers for) Tesla lost something like 300 million dollars. Yet the market thinks that Tesla is worth more than Ford. Only to people who don’t know how to read a balance sheet or a statement of cash flows.
As bad as Tesla Motors is, there is almost always a carnie-barker hypnotizing the markets, or some bit of them. But Tesla isn’t alone.
Now I don’t always like Jim Cramer, but I mostly object to his style. The man is not an idiot.
Wall Street is “blessing any company that spells out its China losses, from Carnival, with its highly visible duo of plague ships, [to] PVH and Nike,” the “Mad Money” host said. “When you see Carnival stock up 2.6% today on the possibility of a big but quantifiable chunk of earnings going away, well, you know this market is driven by hope.”
Before the market opened, Carnival announced that its earnings potential could decrease by 65 cents per share should the company have to shut down its Asia operations through April.
That 65¢ per share is on an EPS of $4.32 for the trailing twelve months. That is not an insignificant hit to the bottom line.
When people tell you that you can’t lose money in something… well, let’s just say that’s what I was hearing in the late 1990s about internet stocks, and around 2005 about real estate. This is the point were I reference Kipling’s “Gods of the Copybook Headings.” You have to scroll down a bit at that link.
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
That’s my favorite stanza, probably, from that poem, which is all good. And while written in 1919 or so, manages to be very much on the money today.
A South Shore man who received just two years probation for committing a pair of 2018 robberies in Boystown has been charged with the cold-blooded slayings of two men during a botched robbery in Chinatown this weekend.
Boystown, in Chicago, is the ‘traditionally gay’ neighborhoods, at least since the 1980s. Though it has begun to diversify for some time now, and the presence of a large number of clubs and eateries and a few theaters means it is a draw from all over the city, for entertainment. And since Wriggly Field is just to the west of Boystown, there are a few of the sports bars associated with baseball.
So they gave him a deal on robbery, aggravated battery, and unlawful restraint. And now 2 people are dead. So what did they think would happen when they went easy on this guy?
Who in their right mind offers probation for TWO robberies?
Not only that, but a little birdie whispers to us that this jagoff was (thisclose) to being released because Felony Review demanded more video than what already existed – the offender trying to carjack other vehicles on the expressway ramp, fleeing the scene immediately after the shootings and being covered in the victims’ blood. That’s not good enough for Crimesha’s social justice warriors.
The incident happened Thursday morning at a home on Philadelphia Church Road. Officials say the homeowner was lying in bed when his wife and daughter returned home from a dentist appointment. A short time later, he heard his daughter scream and rushed to her room where he found an intruder.
No word on how old the daughter is.
So would this be better if he had a knife, or a baseball bat? Would he have been able to help capture someone on a bit of a crime spree if he wasn’t armed? How would the good guy being disarmed have made this situation better? I wish the gun-hating Left would have to explain.
So someone forced their way into a home at 2:30 in the morning.
After a brief struggle with the intruder or intruders, the homeowner tried to flee on foot and was shot at least once.
So one, you have to wake up when they get there. (Alarms are cheap if you don’t care about them being monitored.) After that, my choice is to retrieve the loaded .357 Magnum sitting in my nightstand. But I’m old, fat, and have bad knees from when I was young, skinny and doing too much insane stuff – like skiing down mountains I should never have been on. So while walking away is an option, running – not so much.
Cops are providing no more info. In another story – with a completely annoying video – they say there is nothing to fear. (Of course they do.)
Mobile World Congress 2020 is canceled. The GSMA, the organization responsible for the Barcelona event, announced Wednesday that it’s calling off this year’s MWC, a major event for the mobile phone industry, given the number of companies withdrawing because of the coronavirus.
“The global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for GSMA to hold the event,” John Hoffman, CEO of the GSMA, said in a statement.
Companies like Apple, Samsung, and Google won’t be that much put out by this, but a lot of the smaller phone manufacturers could be hit pretty hard by this.
Companies that had announced they would stay away from MWC include.
That is only a partial list of people who were going to stay away from MWC completely. For example, NVIDIA is an MWC sponsor, and they said that they would also not be attending.
Then there are the list of companies who were still planing to attend, but were limiting what they would do, who they would send, and how they would interact with people.
Samsung apparently has said little that is official, but many employees had been canceling trips to Spain.
Xiaomi was still going to attend, but they had canceled some events, instituted a “no handshake policy” and were going to be frequently sanitizing everything in their booth.
The list of companies who were downgrading their attendance is also longer than what I’ve covered here.
GSMA had a bunch of “safety precautions” announced, but in the end the global pandemic won.
MWC is a big event for the mobile phone industry, and has a large impact on the Barcelona economy. Still, GSMA was apparently considering not canceling as of early Wednesday, and had even announced earlier that they would go ahead with the conference as planned in spite of the cancelations, but it became too much.
And the Left are turning (have turned?) the courts into a weapon.
Florida’s Everglades Coalition is in Tallahassee to lobby legislators on what they want to do about problems in the Everglades. Republicans are ignoring them. Maybe because of some fringe elements involved.
The Everglades Coalition also includes the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), the national group that has received money from billionaire George Soros’ Tides Foundation and has sued President Donald Trump 179 times since he took office, will also be in attendance. [SNIP]
“The abuse of the court system for political ends is nothing new for the radical left,” said [Rep. Anthony Sabatini (R)] “Although this level of court abuse may be a new low for the Never Trump fringe.”
The article linked above doesn’t say much about the goals of The Everglades Coalition, but the Left has been fighting with South Florida Water Management District (SWFMD or Swift Mud) since forever, about the amount of water sent to the everglades from the canal system that includes Lake Okeechobee. The real threat to the Everglades, and most of Florida wildlife right now, are invasive species. In The Everglades, it is Anacondas. (The large snakes.) They are killing off large numbers of native species and seem to be thriving. And of course SFWMD Emptied Lake Okeechobee one year because “a large number of hurricanes were anticipated due to global warming” (it was before that moniker was dropped in favor of “climate change”) and those storms never materialized. So there was no water for The Everglades or the canals, even a couple of towns around the lake that rely on tourism were literally left high and dry, and had their economies decimated. But hey, they were all in on global warming so it must have been the right thing to do.
Anyway, despite a booming economy providing a lot of funds for The Everglades in general, this group is not happy. Has the Left ever said, “Hey, that was a job well done?” Or do they never win? (Aside from the anti-war protestors going into hibernation for 8 years when Obama was in office. I’m not sure that’s a fair example.)
In 1985, Bernie Sanders Defended Nicaragua’s “Suspension Of Certain Civil Liberties”
Yesterday the Washington Post published a story headlined “Bernie Sanders’s foreign policy is a risk for Democrats against Trump.”
